Accurate and rapid drilling up to 40 x d
Centering/pilot drilling and deep-hole drilling
The deep-hole drill CrazyDrill Cool XL perfectly matches with the program of CrazyDrill Pilot (pilot drill or short drill). Pilot drilling with CrazyDrill Pilot or, on inclined surfaces, with CrazyDrill Crosspilot constitutes the base of accurate deep-hole drilling and stable machining. The pilot drill yields a high degree of position accuracy due to its short and sturdy design. In addition, the follow-up drill (CrazyDrill Cool XL 15 to 40 x d) is guided cylindrically by the pilot hole, thus guaranteeing perpendicularity and alignment accuracy.
The tool tolerances guarantee the hole quality (no measurable transition from pilot to follow-up hole) as well as the stable machining process (no jamming).
Tolerance of the pilot drill CrazyDrill Pilot (m5):
< 3 mm (.118”): + 0.002 mm /+ 0.006 mm (+.00008” /+ .00023”)
≤ 6 mm (.236”): + 0.004 mm /+ 0.009 mm (+.00016” /+ .00035”)
Tolerance of the pilot drill CrazyDrill Crosspilot (inclined holes) (k6):
< 3 mm (.118”): 0 mm /+ 0.006 mm (.0” /+ .00023”)
≤ 6 mm (.236”): + 0.001 mm /+ 0.009 mm (+.00004” /+ .00035”)
Tolerance of the follow-up drill CrazyDrill Cool XL 15 to 40 x d (k6):
< 3 mm (.118”): 0 mm /+ 0.006 mm (.0” /+ .00023”)
≤ 6 mm (.236“): 0.001 mm /+ 0.009 mm (.00004“ /+ .00035“)
Drilling process
General information
In the industry of metal work tools, shorter processing times are always in high demand. At the same time, the requirements to the manufacturing precision and the process reliability are extremely high. In order to fulfill these requirements, the "machine tool – spindle – tool – tool holder" system need to be considered as a whole (see additional info).
For the use of the CrazyDrill Cool XL and CrazyDrill Pilot, Mikron Tool has defined a fast and reliable procedure which achieves optimal drilling results.
Rapid deep-hole drilling up to 40 x d
- Pilot drilling (in one step)
- Deep-hole drilling in one step up to 40 x d
Exception: a deep-hole drilling cycle with chip break and chip removal (pecks) must be used in difficult-to-machine materials such as titanium
Drilling with CrazyDrill Cool XL in one step
1. Pilot drilling up to drilling depth of 2 x d:
- With CrazyDrill Pilot or on inclined surfaces with CrazyDrill Crosspilot
2. CrazyDrill Cool XL:
- Switch on coolant of CrazyDrill Cool XL
- Enter the hole at a speed of maximum n = 500 rpm and vf = 1’000 mm/min (39,37 IPM) without touching the bottom of the hole
- Increase speed (see cutting data) and wait until the desired drilling speed is reached. Program waiting time in case of slow spindle acceleration rate
- Drill in one step with feed rate (see cutting data)
- After the desired drilling depth is reached, return with the drill to drilling depth 2 x d at feed rate or rapid traverse
- Reduce speed to n = 500 rpm
- Exit the bore at speed n = 500 rpm and vf = 1’000 mm/min. (39,37 IPM)
Note:
For the drills of 20, 30 and 40 x d the CrazyDrill Cool XL needs to enter the hole and be retracted from the pilot hole at reduced speed. For the CrazyDrill Cool XL 15 x d the afore mentioned procedure is not necessary.
Drilling with CrazyDrill Cool XL with chip break and chip removal (for titanium)
G83 deep-drilling cycle with chip break and chip removal
Q = depth of the respective peck
1. Pilot drilling up to drilling depth of 2 x d:
- With CrazyDrill Pilot or on inclined surfaces with CrazyDrill Crosspilot
2. CrazyDrill Cool XL:
- Switch on coolant of CrazyDrill Cool XL
- Enter the hole at speed of maximum n = 500 rpm and vf = 1’000 mm/min (39,37 IPM) without touching the bottom of the hole
- Increase speed (see cutting data) and wait until the desired drilling speed is reached. Program waiting time in case of slow spindle acceleration rate
- First peck Q1: Drill with CrazyDrill Cool XL up to maximum drilling depth Q1 in one peck, then remove chips
- Additional pecks Qx (see cutting data chart), then remove chips
- After the desired cutting depth is reached, return with the drill to drilling depth 2 x d at feed rate or rapid traverse
- Reduce speed to n = 500 rpm
- Exit the bore speed n = 500 rpm and vf = 1’000 mm/min (39,37 IPM)
Note:
- Do not take the drill completely out from the bore between pecks (otherwise risk of resonant vibration).
- For the drills of 20, 30 and 40 x d the CrazyDrill Cool XL needs to enter the hole and be retracted from the pilot hole at reduced speed. For the CrazyDrill Cool XL 15 x d the afore mentioned procedure is not necessary.
Tested and approved
Mikron Tool has determined the ideal cutting parameters (drilling speed to tool life ratio and process reliability) when using CrazyDrill Cool XL and CrazyDrill Pilot respectively CrazyDrill Crosspilot. These are listed in the cutting data tables according to drill diameter, drilling depth and material to be machined. The detailed cutting data tested by Mikron Tool, such as cutting speed Vc, feed rate f and drilling impact Q, permit a quick and secure machining.
The overview of the cutting values table according to material group, material type, hardness degree and tensile strength, material number, DIN and AISI/ASTM/UNS permits quick determination of the parameters to be used.
Packaging
An impact-resistant and user-friendly drill packaging is absolutely necessary for CrazyDrill Cool XL. Mikron Tool offers all tools of the CrazyDrill Cool XL family in a high quality, single package.
