The revolutionary drill in terms of
geometry and cooling concept

With CrazyDrill Cool SST-Inox, Mikron Tool introduces a twist drill type for stainless steels, heat- and acid-resistant steels and CrCo alloys in the diameter range from 1 up to 6.35 mm (.039“ up to .250“, fractional inches available) and for drilling depths from 6 x d to 40 x d. The tungsten carbide drill is designed with  internal helicoidally arranged cooling channels which bring up to four times more coolant volume to the drill tip. The new cooling system, the new design of tip and flute as well as the innovative coating enable drilling in one single step up to a drilling depth of 40 x d with high performance in terms of quality, tool life and machining time.

CrazyDrill Cool SST-Inox - Drilling in Inox & Co. in one single step

CrazyDrill Cool SST-Inox, the small solid carbide drill bit of Mikron Tool for stainless steel, heat- /  acid-resistant-  and CrCo alloys, distinguishes itself through extremely high drilling performance. One single step is sufficient to drill the full depth of 40 x d – without pecking.

Various factors are responsible for this absolutely singular performance: an innovative geometry and coating and a new through-tool coolant.

Innovative geometry

The new chip flute profile is divided into two areas: a front chip flute area with a special chip breaker shape ensures compact, short and curved chips; a rear chip flute area with extended flute shape ensures perfect chip removal.

New coating

The new high-performance coating (copper red) is heat- and wear-resistant, prevents build-up edges and promotes uniform chip flushing. A very long tool life is given.

New generation of cooling channels

The extraordinary performance and process accuracy of CrazyDrill Cool SST-Inox is based in first instance by its cooling characteristics: two helicoidal internal coolant channels which go up to the drill tip guarantee a constant cooling during the entire drilling operation. The coolant channels in its cross section are similar to the shape of a drop and enable up to 4 times more coolant flow compared to the today’s common circular cross section channels.

For small drill sizes under diameter 3 mm (.118“), an additional „power chamber“ provides  sufficient coolant flow: large, hollow section in the shank supplies more coolant flow to the two twisted cooling channels.

The advantage of this efficient cooling, which goes up to the tool tip, is definitely a higher tool life because the overheating of the cutting edges is avoided right from the beginning. Combined with the best suitable geometry, this cooling helps that the chips are broken easier and can be flushed out of the spiral flutes more easily. All these factors are needed for a machining process with higher cutting parameters (speeds and feed) and for drilling without chip removal / pecking.

Perfect drilling preparation

For drilling depths up to 6 x d, centering is not necessary on straight surfaces. With its tip angle of 140° and its chisel “s”-form the drill has good self-centering. We recommend pilot drilling or centering only on irregular, rough (with CrazyDrill Coolpilot) or inclined surfaces (with CrazyDrill Crosspilot) and if a high position accuracy is required.

For drilling depths over 6 x d, Mikron Tool recommends pilot drilling with CrazyDrill Coolpilot or CrazyDrill Crosspilot on inclined surfaces.
